8th trip of 2025
White Acres
Campground Bardstown, KY
September 7 - 13
(Skull Island TVA Campground, Harrison TN)
(Cedar Creek COE Campground Mount Juliet, TN)
We met Jim and Diane at White Acres Campground just outside of Bardstown Kentucky.
This trip was a bit of old mixed with new. Jim and I made the Great American road trip bringing his
newly acquired RV known as "Captain America" in 2010 and stayed at this very campground.
The weather was spectacular, low 80s during the day and in the 50s at night.
Gus and Bonnie got along and enjoyed spending time resting alongside the camp fire as well.
Bardstown is known as the bourbon capital of the world so we ventured out to check some of the distilleries.
Unlike 2010, Buffalo Trace in Frankfort was the only distillery that offered free tours and tastings.
Buffalo Trace was devastated by the April flood waters and yet they were able to restore operations in just a few weeks.
(note the water/mud line shown on the side of 1 of the barrel houses.)
All other distilleries did not provide tours or they charged $26 - $100 for their tour/tasting experiences.
We did go to Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Preservation, and Old Bardstown Distilleries.
While we were in Frankfort, we also did the Rebecca Ruth Candy factory/museum and inventor of the "Bourbon Ball".
They make them for Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark, Even Williams, and would guess others as well)
We also checked out several local wineries such as Wight Meyer, Forest Edge, and McIntyre Farms
Wine tasting was very reasonable. $6-$10 for 6 options from a varied selection of dry - to sweet fruit wines.
We went to Louisville and was able to tour Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum.
As always we never went hungry or thirsty, Heidi and Diane split the evening meals throughout the week.
After a day of touring, we enjoyed a camp fire. Diane provided Bourbon Cream Root beer floats for desert. YUM!!
